The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
